What motivates voters to support candidates who violate democratic norms? In recent years, incumbents have gradually undermined democratic institutions and shifted power relations to their advantage. Despite this, many such politicians continue to enjoy the support of their constituents. At the Goethe Institut in Barcelona and in cooperation with the Innovation in Politics Institute, Elena Avramovska will present the findings of FES Democracy of the Future’s report ‘Identity, Partisanship, Polarization: How democratically elected politicians get away with autocratizing their countries’ and zoom in on what motivates Spanish voters to support undemocratic politicians.
